For a long time GNOME have had a rather boring flat bluegreyish background by default when you built it from scratch. We felt something had to be done, so after lots and lots of discussion, we settled on this, based on a photo by Garrett.

For those who don’t like it, I bring you this alternative.
Oh, and regarding the GNOME Gothenburg Birthday Party.
Time: 18.00, Friday September 7th
Place: Flygarns Haga, Vasagatan, Gothenburg
Woot! Nicer than the previous default background!
Why not fix the icons while at it -> Tango?
It’s too much saturated, but not bad at all!
You fool, don’t you know that alternate bikesheds should be BLUE!
Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
What can i say, green is sexy and I’m a sucker for macro shots
I don’t like it. You Gnome developers really suck. I’m going to use KDE4, I heard that among the other things it’s guaranteed that it’s gonna e*n*l*a*r*g*e y*o*u*r p*e*n*i*s as well!!!
Definitely the bike shed.
I like the alternative picture, but I’d prefer a blue bike shed. Is that doable?
Erik: well, it’s using gnome-icon-theme, made after the tango style guidelines. So yeah, it’s kind of fixed already.
Johny: as long as you keep using free software, I’m happy. Is the feature you mentioned using d-bus? *hugs*
Markus: team up with Hans, I’m sure you can figure something out.
Well, I don’t really care but I don’t like the picture. The left is ok, but the fold looks horrible… For some reason it seems to look *much* better in widescreen format… perhaps you should have taken a look at a normal 4:3 ratio before choosing this wallpaper
That folder icon is what bugs me. It can simply not be Tango. It looks and feels nowhere like it.
erik, sure it is tango! and it is very nice, in the way that it doesn’t get in the way. I really love the G-I-T folder icons
I don’t like it. It’s to special, the default wallpaper should be very discret and simple. like this: http://gnomesupport.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12793&sid=72f0fd13d53b923f29574c7fab8ede3e
Most people don’t change their wallpaper (I know it sounds crazy to us geeks, but it’s the truth:)). The default wallpaper should be somthing you could live with for many years!
btw: The Gnome Icon Theme (including folders) are way nices than the Tango Icon Theme. It’s imo the best icont theme out there!!
I have to say, I think that new default looks pretty nice.
Though, the ones linked by Mathias seem to make more sense as a default (especially the alpha one).
For those of you that didn’t get the joke:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_of_the_bikeshed
One might suspect that to be the reason why it wasn’t changed before…
Never heard of the Bikeshed Problem, so I didn’t get the joke. But at least I learned something, and I guess I even made my selves a perfectly good example of the concept
Congratulations with this new beautiful background. I really like it: the green really stands out and makes a good vivid and alive impression. It’s the kind of wallpaper I would use myself even if it wouldn’t be the default
. Anyways, congratulations and keep up the good work.
@Mathias: the wallpaper at the link you mention, looks a lot like the one that comes or used to come with Mac OS X. I think it’s best for Gnome to be unique, also in its artwork, and not to copy (or what seems copying) others. Else, we will never reach the 10×10 goal
.
